SUMMARY:Recycle Your Holiday Lights
DESCRIPTION:The City of San Leandro announced that its free holiday lights recycling program is available starting November 15\, 2021\, through January 14\, 2022. Holiday light strands in working or non-working conditions may be dropped off Monday through Friday\, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Public Works Service Center\, located at 14200 Chapman Road. Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs)\, pre-lit trees/decorations\, and lighted garlands are not accepted. This event is open to San Leandro residents only and face covering is required.\nIt can take up to 1\,000 years for holiday lights to break down in a conventional landfill. Recycling holiday lights conserves natural resources because oil is needed to make plastic. The lights are separated for their metal and plastic and then given new life as new products. Recycling non-working holiday lights is also a great opportunity to make the switch to LED lights\, which last longer\, and are more energy-efficient and durable. Residents are encouraged to bring in their working and/or non-working light strands of all lengths and colors. Collection bins are located in the lobby of the Public Works Service Center. Lights should be free of all bags\, binding\, and packaging. Extension cords\, Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)\, pre-lit trees\, wreaths\, and garland will not be accepted.\nFor more information\, please call the City of San Leandro Recycling Hotline at (510) 577-6026.
